Chianti Classico new regulations officially approved

door | 10 jul 2023 | Nieuws

Official approval by decree was published on 1st July in the Gazzetta Ufficiale for amendments to the Chianti Classico denomination regulations.

Two key changes in relation to the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category were as follows: the potential to add to the label one of the 11 named Additional Geographical Units (a specific delimited area with homogeneous characteristics) and from the 2027 vintage onwards, a requirement to adjust the varietal base of the wine such that the minimum percentage of Sangiovese in the blend is 90%, up from 80%. Further down the line, there will be a requirement to limit additional varieties to 10% of the blend and these will be restricted to native varieties only.

President Giovanni Manetti states that “This is an historic achievement for the denomination. Now consumers will finally be able to choose wines produced in specific UGAs and fully appreciate the subtle differences inherent in the Black Rooster region. This represents a new step towards a greater appreciation of the unique characteristics of Chianti Classico”.
